Caption | Express steam locomotive. In 1899, the GNSR ordered 10 Class V locomotives from Neilson. After delivery of the first 5, the GNSR, temporarily suffering from financial difficulties and a decline in traffic, had to cancel delivery of the remaining 5 locomotives. Neilson was then able to sell them on to the South Eastern & Chatham Railway (SECR). The 5 engines were designated Class G, Nos. 676-680 at SECR. They proved themselves so well that the SECR wanted to take over the remaining 5 units from the GNSR, but the latter refused. The locomotives were transferred to the Southern Railway in 1923, but were withdrawn from service as early as 1925-27. |
Caption (German) | Schnellzugs-Dampflokomotive. |
