Caption | Built in 1871, sold in 1907, the special feature of this rather antique machine is the thick pipe that extends from the smoke chamber into the water tank. This is the so-called "condensing apparatus", a device that allows to capture at least partially the exhaust steam of the working machine, to condense it and to recycle it as water. This procedure was used only on lines with a very high percentage of tunnels, for example, in urban areas. In this specific case, we are talking about the "District Railway", a predecessor of the London Underground. The route at that time probably corresponds to the core of today's "District Line", which runs largely underground in the city center. |
Caption (German) | Baujahr 1871, Verkauft 1907.
