Caption | A unique and special case among all the British steam locomotives: Wilson Worsdell, who succeeded his brother T. W. Worsdell as chief engineer at the North Eastern Railway in 1890, had one of the two-cylinder compound express locomotives designed by T. W. Worsdell converted to a three-cylinder compound system. Worsdell to convert one of the two-cylinder compound express engines of the successful M1 type to the three-cylinder compound system, which was rare (especially in the UK). The low-pressure cylinders were mounted on the outside and the internal engine was driven by the high-pressure cylinder. |
