Caption | The E4 series for light mixed traffic, which comprised exactly 100 machines, was introduced by chief designer Holden of the Great Eastern Railway from 1891 and continued to be built until 1902. Characteristic of that period are the chimneys of the G.E.R. locomotives of that time: the "stove-pipe" designs common on the continent were absolutely unusual in GB, a "collar" of some kind had to be - and remained canon until the end of the steam age. The somewhat "meager" type E4 does not seem to have been particularly successful, 82 pieces were already scrapped in the 1930s, the original locomotive No. 490 has been preserved in a museum. |
