Caption | The Furness Railway existed from 1844 until it was absorbed into the London, Midland and Scottish Railways in 1922. The road number 1 is somewhat irritating: obviously, much older machines with the lowest numbers were retired and then filled with more modern locomotives. The 17 freight engines, very typical for that time, were designed by W. F. Petttigrew and were built in the years 1912-20. Six of them survived the nationalization in 1948. |
