Here we have the famous "Bulldog" class of the GWR in front of us: a 2'B express locomotive from the design office of Messrs Dean and Churchward of the Great Western Railway. The series of around 60 locomotives, split into various number groups, was built between 1899 and 1910 - external frames on the driving and running wheels and also on the tender - an exceptionally elegant appearance. The locomotive named "City of Truro", then number 3717, was the first steam locomotive in the world to reach the 100 miles per hour mark, well over 160 km/h! This locomotive has been preserved, the others were taken out of service over a longer period between 1930 and 1951.

District Railway 10
Caption
The special feature of this rather ancient machine is the thick pipe that extends from the smoke chamber into the water tank. This is the so-called "condensing apparatus", a device that allows the exhaust steam of the working machine to be at least partially collected, condensed and recycled as water. This procedure was used only on lines with a very high percentage of tunnels, for example, in urban areas. In this specific case, we are talking about the "District Railway", a predecessor of the London Underground. The route at that time probably corresponds to the core of today's "District Line", which runs largely underground in the city center.

Wainwright's successor, R. Maunsell, had locomotive 179, shown here, completely rebuilt at the SE&CR workshop in Ashford in 1919. The locomotive, which externally had nothing in common with the original locomotive except for the running gear, proved so successful that a further 10 locomotives were rebuilt accordingly in 1920, but this time by Beyer Peacock in Manchester. The 11 rebuilt locomotives were designated Class E1. They served as the prototype for the Southern Railway's Class L1. The last locomotive was withdrawn in 1961

The axle arrangement is almost always 0-4-2T, larger engines are not usable because of the many curves and the light superstructure.

Built 1899-1910, designed by William Dean and further developed by G.J. Churchward, exceptionally fast locomotives, one of these locomotives was the first steam locomotive in the world to reach a speed of over 100 miles (160 km/h) in 1904. Retirements began in the late 1930s, with the exception of the City of Truro, which survives as a historic locomotive (this is the record-breaking 1904 locomotive), the series was off the rails by 1951.

GWR-2'B express locomotive of the "Bulldog" series, built in 1899-1910, Dean and Churchward design. A sister engine to the "City of Bath" shown here, the "City of Truro" set a record in 1904 in that this was the first steam locomotive in the world to reach 100 miles (over 160 km/h). The famous locomotives were sidelined between 1937 and 1951, the "City of Truro" has been preserved (in working order) as a historic locomotive.

The "Dorchester" was Canada's first steam locomotive. It was built in 1835 by Robert Stephenson in Newcastle-on-Tyne and shipped in parts across the Atlantic. The present model was built and photographed much later, perhaps for the 50th anniversary in 1886, which would fit the impression of the image

Derby Works, Midland Railway (MR) 214
Caption
The locomotives were built by rebuilding Jenny Lind Class locomotives. Originally, this was a Class 5 tender locomotive built in 1855 by E.B. Wilson and Co in Leeds with the wheel arrangement 2-2-2, which bore the No. 16. Parts of older discarded locomotives were reused in the construction of the locomotive. Many of the Class 5 locomotives were discarded and demolished in the 1860s. Some locomotives were converted to tender locomotives at the Derby Works, retaining only the boiler and parts of the linkage. The 214 was converted to a saddle tank locomotive in 1872 and to a tender locomotive with a water box behind the cab in 1876. The locomotive was renumbered several times.

Glasgow-Springburn, St. Rollox Railway Works
Caption
The St. Rollox Works were founded around 1850 as the central workshop of the Caledonian Railway. The works grew in size and became the maintenance center for the L.M.S. (London Midland and Scottish Railway) from 1923. British Railways took over the plant in 1948 and continued to operate it on a full scale. From about 1980 at the latest, the importance of the center decreased significantly, and today it is hardly recognizable, although in a smaller part maintenance work for railroad vehicles is still done, otherwise it has become a privatized commercial complex with supermarkets, parking lots, etc., and the plaything of major investors with some affinity to railroads, such as Alstom or Knorr Bremse.

(London Midland and Scottish Railway).

Bodmin & Wadebridge Railway, Satteltank-Tendermaschine

Opened as the first steam-powered railroad in Cornwall on July 1, 1834, for the time being still far from any other rail connection. Largely only freight traffic, but with the visible wagon stock, of which three wagons (as in the picture) are exhibited in the National Railway Museum in York, also passenger traffic on a shorter route. The locomotive is a small saddle tank tender engine with axle pattern 0-4-0. The actually unusual tender is lined up at the "wrong" end. The financially troubled railroad was taken over by the L&SWR around 1847

The naming of high-class connections had a long tradition in GB. The "Royal Scot" from London Euston to Glasgow was one of the very famous trains. The name for the train connection is not to be confused with the locomotive class "Royal Scots" - but it was precisely these machines that actually ran the "Royal Scot" from 1927 until the appearance of even more powerful locomotive types, especially the Coronation Class.

Sir Nigel Gresley's class "A3" hot steam triple express locomotive, axle pattern "Pacific", built in 77 units starting in 1922. It was intended for the heaviest and fastest trains on the east coast between London, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. It was later supplemented by more advanced but basically similar machines, and some were displaced into somewhat lighter service. Virtually all A3 locomotives remained active until around 1962, although only rarely in the London area. After that, however, the phaseouts progressed rapidly. One "Flying Scotsman" locomotive has been preserved in working order.
