Caption | 1st class passenger car of the London, Brighton & South Coast Railway (LBSCR). The appointment of Albert Panter as Carriage and Wagon Works Manager under Robert Billinton (Locomotive, Carriage and Wagon Superintendent) in 1898 led to the introduction of bogie cars for mainline trains in 1905. The Panter-designed bogie cars were very modern for the time, and the distinctive shape of the roof, which curved sharply upward, soon gave them the name "Balloon." There were two length variants with 54 feet (16.46 m) and 48 feet (14.63 m) respectively |
