Caption | This ship was laid down in 1914 as the "Hindenburg" at Schichau in Gdansk. Due to the war and the regulations of the Versailles Treaty, construction was delayed and the launch did not take place until June 17, 1922 - and failed. A second attempt on 12.8.22 then went smoothly. Because the sister ship "Columbus" built at the same time had to be delivered to England (= SS "Homeric"), the "Hindenburg" took over its name. The ship, now called "Columbus", was subsequently the largest in the German fleet until the appearance of the "Bremen" and "Europa" around 1930. In 1927/29, the "Columbus" underwent a far-reaching conversion, received new propulsion systems (turbines instead of piston engines) and superstructures and then looked much more modern than on the present card. The Second World War took the ship by surprise on a cruise in the Caribbean. The (mainly American) passengers were put ashore in La Havana, Cuba. Attempting to break through to Germany, the ship was stopped by a British destroyer, whereupon the steamer was itself sunk by its own crew. Not sailed |
