Caption | In the course of a true economic thriller, two saloon steamers, very large for the time, were built in Vitznau in 1872 (Escher Wyss). The buyer was a newly founded competitor of the newly consolidated "Vereinigte Dampfschifffahrtsgesellschaft des Vierwaldstättersee" (United Steam Navigation Company of Lake Lucerne), initiated by the founder of steam navigation on the lake at that time, the banker Casimir Knörr. The two ships were called "Italia" and "Germania". The former operated up to and including 1963, the latter set sail for the last time in 1949. |
