Caption | Swissair President and Managing Director Walter Berchtold (right) makes point on the future of continental-range air service during relaxing moment with Swissair Deputy Chairman Edgar Primault and Lockheed Chairman Robert E. Gross in full-sized model of new Electra propjet interior. This arrangement, being produced for American Airlines, provides "conversational grouping" of seats for a living room atmosphere as the new jet-and-propeller airliner cruises through the air at 650 km/h. For those who prefer them, regular reclining airliner seats will be available in additional compartments, providing a choice for up to 71 passengers in short to medium range flights. The first Electra is scheduled to fly in early 1958. Six major airlines have ordered 128 of the new propjet Electras; first European carrier to place them in service will be KLM Royal Dutch Airlines. Dr. Berchtold and Dr. Rudolf V. Heberlein, Swissair Chaiman, are leading an eight-man delegation of Swiss civil aviation experts on a tour of American aircraft establishments. They are scheduled to depart from New York for Switzerland Nov. 11, following inspection of Lockheed, Douglas, Convair, Boeing, and a visit to the University of Illinois. |
