Caption | Built in 1929/30 by Fairfields Shipbuilding in Govan (on the Clyde) under the name "Empress of Japan". The ship, which was powered by steam turbines and looked larger than it was (around 26,000 GRT) with its three funnels, was used in the Canada-Far East transpacific trade until the outbreak of war. After the USA entered the war, the ship changed its name to "Empress of Scotland" and sailed as a troop carrier. Modernization after the war. It sailed mainly on the Liverpool-New York route, but made more and more cruises. In 1957, the ship was sold to Germany, where it underwent a major refit and reappeared on the transatlantic trade in 1958/59 as the "Hanseatic". In September 1966, the ship caught fire in the port of New York and burned out to a large extent. The wreck was towed to Hamburg and scrapped there |
