Caption | Turbine steamer "Gouverneur Général de Gueydon", built in 1921/1922 by the French state as an aid to maritime shipping and the shipyard industry, together with three sister ships; the present unit at the Chantiers & Ateliers de Provence in Port-de-Bouc; after ach completion, the "Vierlinge" went to the Compagnie Générale Transatlantique for its North African services; in 1942, the ship was seized by the German Wehrmacht and handed over to Italy the following year; during the withdrawal of German troops from North Africa, the steamer was self-sunk in May 1943 at Bizerta |
Caption (German) | Turbinendampfer "Gouverneur Général de Gueydon", erbaut 1921/1922 vom französischen Staat, als Hilfe für die Seeschifffahrt und die Werftindustrie, zusammen mit drei Schwesterschiffen; die vorliegende Einheit bei den Chantiers & Ateliers de Provence in Port-de-Bouc; nach ach Fertigstellung gingen die "Vierlinge" an die Compagnie Générale Transatlantique für ihre Nordafrikadienste; 1942 wurde das Schiff von der Deutschen Wehrmacht beschlagnahmt und im Folgejahr an Italien übergeben; beim Rückzug der deutschen Truppen aus Nordafrika wurde der Dampfer im Mai 1943 in Bizerta selbstversenkt |
