Caption | Built in 1928 at Blohm & Voss in Hamburg for the Woerman Line and the German East Africa Line. Propulsion: four geared turbines, all acting on a propeller shaft. Sailed secretly on 22 Nov 1939 with undetermined destination in Mozambique, where she was formally interned. On Dec. 2, she was spotted and stopped by South African Navy aircraft about 50 nautical miles south of Cap Agulhas. This was apparently the first serious engagement of the South African military. The Royal Navy battlecruiser veteran "Renown", which was sent for, took over those on board and sank the "Watussi" with the heavy ship's artillery. Postmark 9.7.1935 |
Poststempel 9.7.1935 |
