Caption | Swissair had three different Ju 86's. The first two had diesel engines. HB-IXI Ju 86 B-0 came to Swissair on 7.5.1936, but had a crash landing with major damage at Wixhausen (D) on 12.8.1936 and went back to the Junkers factory. The JU-86 B-1 HB-IXE came to Swissair as a replacement for the HB-IXI on 3/16/37. Its diesel engines were very prone to failure over short distances and it was therefore flown back to Junkers on 4.11.38 for conversion to BMW gasoline radial engines. On 2/5/39, the former HB-IXE now with gasoline engines returned to Swissair as the Ju 86 Z-11 HB-IXA and crashed on 7/20/39 near Constance. Flight captain Walter Ackermann, radio operator Anton Mannhart and four passengers were killed. |
Caption (German) | Die Swissair hatte drei verschiedene Ju 86.
