Caption | Built 1912 by John Brown in Clydeside/Scotland, commissioned 17.8.1912, owner: Union Shipping Company in New Zealand, range of operation: from NZ via the Pacific Islands to Canada, Vancouver, propulsion: two four-cylinder triple-expansion engines, 1931 sale to Canadian-Australasian Lines, 19.6.1940: not far from Auckland she ran into a mine laid by the German auxiliary cruiser "Orion" and sank on site, fortunately without casualties. However, a large gold stock of the Bank of England (555 bars) sank; through large-scale and also risky salvage operations, a total of 550 of these bars could be brought back to the surface in 1941 and then in 1953. Run around 1920 |
