Caption | Two of the most famous ships ever. The keel of the "Queen Mary" was laid in December 1930 at John Brown on the Clyde. After many financing quarrels, the christening, a real state affair, took place on September 26, 1934, the maiden voyage started on May 27, 1936. The giant ship of over 80,000 GRT conquered the blue ribbon shortly afterwards. The "Queen Mary" became a very popular and happy ship, which, however, had an unpleasant tendency to roll. Her thousandth transatlantic voyage in late 1967 was also her last. The ship was purchased by the city of Long Beach and the "Q. M." is still there as a museum ship and tourist attraction. Not sailed |
