Caption | An example for the British freight cars of the steam era, i.e. until well into the mid-sixties: extremely small by continental standards, very short spacing, extremely simple design, no continuous brake ("unfitted"), only lever handbrake for hard braking (the long levers rising diagonally to the right). The cars were classified by hollow mass units ("bins") or by the number of sidewall boards used ("planks"). Train speed for these unfitted goods trains was 25 mph, just a fraction over 40. Braking was only by the locomotive (plus usually tender) and the "brake van" at the rear of the train. After about 1960, this archaic system was very quickly replaced by more modern solutions. These open wagons were mostly used for "mineral traffic", i.e. mining and especially coal traffic. |
Kohleverkehr |
